Métis Community Connection Statement
Robyn Adams is a Red River Métis Citizen with the Manitoba Métis Federation. Connecting to Métis community has been integral to me in understanding who I am and where I come from. Growing up one of the ways our Michif heritage was celebrated in my life was going with my granny to Festival du Voyageur, and later on this would become a place I worked and connected to many Michif artists, community members and Elders. My sister and I got into beading by going to beading circles at the MMF and for the past 5 years beading has become one of the most therapeutic and life-giving art forms for me. Beading circles are such fun joyful ways to connect to kin.
Since studying Architecture, I heard about IDPSA. Connecting to Indigenous students in my home territory has really impacted me while I study abroad and figure out where I fit as a Michif Designer. I co-founded a similar group called ILANDS (Indigenous Landscape and Architecture Network of Design Students) at UBC which has been incredibly rewarding to create and foster community in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and create a space for belonging and peer support.
